The Importance of Slowing Down and Being Present

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting — especially on how fast everything seems to move. I love a fresh start, a new plan, and the thrill of productivity, but I’ve noticed something: I’m constantly rushing through the day, planning the next thing before I even finish what I’m doing now.

I’ve realised that I’m often more focused on finishing than I am on being present. I find myself looking forward to the moment something is done, rather than enjoying the process of doing it. I’m always thinking of the next item on my to-do list — the next goal, the next milestone.

And honestly? It’s exhausting.

We all know how important it is to be present. We hear it all the time — “Be in the now,” “Enjoy the journey,” “Slow down.” But why is it so difficult to actually do it?

It Starts With Awareness

For me, it all starts with one thing: awareness.

Just pausing. Taking a breath. Noticing.

Sometimes, I have to literally stop myself and say, “Hey, just enjoy the walk. Just be happy where you are.”

We move so quickly through life that we forget to enjoy the little things — the quiet cup of tea, the feeling of sunshine on our face, the satisfaction of completing something with care. But when I do slow down, when I become present, I feel happier. More grounded. More alive.

I’ve realised that being present isn’t just about mindfulness — it’s about living more fully.

My Intention: Embrace the Process

I want to enjoy the process more, not just the outcome. I want to stop rushing through life like it’s one giant checklist and start savoring it like a beautiful, unpredictable adventure.

So I asked myself: What can I do to become more present in everyday life?

And here’s what I’ve been working on…

How I’m Practicing Presence

1. Daily meditation
Even just 5 minutes helps me tune into my breath, connect with my body, and quiet my mind. It grounds me — especially in the middle of busy days. (See my YouTube Channel for daily dose of meditations).

2. Noticing small things
I try to really see what’s around me — the sky, a flower, the way my coffee smells. It helps me step out of autopilot and into appreciation.

3. Reducing doom scrolling
Social media can quickly become a rabbit hole. I’m learning to set boundaries and check in with how I feel after scrolling.

4. Connecting with nature
A short walk, barefoot in the grass, watching the trees move — nature has a magical way of bringing me back to the present.

5. Mindful movement
Practices like yoga or stretching help me slow down and listen to my body, especially when my mind is racing.

6. Journaling
Writing helps me pause, reflect, and bring clarity to my thoughts. Even a few sentences a day makes a difference. (See my article about creating a powerful morning routine that sticks.)

7. Creative time
Whether it’s drawing, painting, or simply doodling — creativity slows me down and lets me explore the moment without pressure.

An Invitation to You

If you’ve also been feeling like life is moving too fast, I invite you to pause. To breathe. To ask yourself:

Where can I slow down, just a little? What can I notice right now?

You don’t need a whole new routine. You just need a moment — and then another. Presence lives in those small pauses, in the space between doing and being.

Let’s stop rushing through life and start living it — one mindful moment at a time.
